The Grand Rapids Community Foundation is sad to note the passing of community activist, philanthropist and friend, Gene Proctor. Gene was the the recipient of the Grand Rapids Community Foundation’s 2006 Outstanding African American Philanthropist Award.
In 1994, Gene was instrumental in starting the first Community Foundation scholarship fund specifically for black students. The fund, Black Men Building Resources is currently valued at $300,000 and awards between 10 and 15 college scholarships each year to young men and women. Last year, the fund awarded $13,000 in scholarships to 23 students.
Gene retired from Baxter Community Center, where he served as executive director for 17 years. He was also the Director of the D&W Foundation and in this role, he helped the corporation with its philanthropic efforts which are long recognized for a commitment to the African American and other communities of color.
Our condolences are extended to his wife Virginia and his many family members.
