The Board of Trustees of the Grand Rapids (Michigan) Community Foundation recently approved grants to ensure the sustainability of two local non-profit agencies, one that protects and supports children who are victims of sexual abuse and the other that addresses the emerging needs of the senior population. A grant was also awarded to connect and extend the West Michigan regional trail network. The three grants total an investment of $218,000. The grants include:
Children’s Assessment Center provides a comprehensive coordinated response for sexually abused children in Kent County through prevention, assessment, medical care, counseling and legal protection in a child-friendly, supportive and safe environment. The Children’s Assessment Center is building the capacity of the organization to ensure the development of sustainable resources and to grow their services. Grant award is $28,000.
Senior Neighbors Inc. evaluates and addresses the needs of adults 60 years of age and older in Kent County. The agency also works with other organizations to provide coordinated services for seniors as well as to educate the community about issues and concerns facing older adults. As the first baby boomers enter their 60s, Senior Neighbors is working to expand its capacity and programming to serve this emerging demographic. Grant award is $40,000.
West Michigan Trails and Greenways Coalition has provided regional coordination for completing and connecting a trails network in West Michigan. With the strategic plan in place the Coalition is now working to add 140 miles of new trail ways in the next three to four years. This project will add value in terms of appreciating environmental resources, showcasing the connection between communities and offering residents and visitors increased access to a free mode of recreation and transportation. Grant award is $150,000.
