Community leader, banker and philanthropist David G. Frey is the recipient of the Grand Rapids Community Foundation's Jack Chaille Award for 2005. The award will be given to Frey at the Community Foundation's annual donor reception on October 6, 2005 at the David D. Hunting YMCA.
Frey served as a Grand Rapids Community Foundation Trustee from 1987 to 1996 and was named chair of the Board in 1993. He has remained a strong supporter of the Community Foundation since leaving the Board.
The Chaille Award is given to key Foundation supporters and honors the memory of William Jackson "Jack" Chaille (President and Chair of the Board of Rospatch Corporation) who was its first honoree and namesake in 1997.
Frey guided the Community Foundation's investment strategy and practices as well as helped reinforce its role in making capital grants. "David seems to have an intuition about this community and what is needed to make it a success. He has been a key leader in many capital campaigns and creation of many downtown landmarks –Rosa Parks Circle and Maya Lin Park, the Van Andel Arena, Grand Valley State University's downtown campus, DeVos Hall, the new DeVos Place and countless others," said Diana R. Sieger, President of the Community Foundation. "He is a great proponent of education, the environment, the arts, business, tourism, political involvement and community philanthropy," added Sieger.
Frey has been involved with the Right Place, he is also a Trustee of the Frederik Meijer Charitable Trust, the Gerald R. Ford Foundation, the Grand Rapids Art Museum Foundation and the Grand Valley State University Foundation. He is a member of the Michigan Business Roundtable and Economic and Rotary Clubs of Grand Rapids. In 1981, he served as President and Campaign Chairman of the United Way of Kent County.
Frey is the Chairman of the Board of Trustee of the Frey Foundation, a family foundation that was established in 1973 by his parents Edward and Frances Frey.
He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received both his undergraduate and law degrees.
Frey, 63 began his banking career 1971 with Manufacturers Hanover Corporation in New York. In 1974, he returned to Grand Rapids to join Union Bank & Trust. Since 1978, Mr. Frey has served as Executive Vice President, President, and then Chairman of Union Bank & Trust Company and Union Bancorp, Inc., its parent. Successive mergers brought Mr. Frey to leadership roles at NBD and Bank One. He retired from the position of Chairman of Bank One, West Michigan at the end of 2000, serving as advisor to Bank One until last year. Bank One is now JPMorgan Chase.
